Hoshi, Katsuya; Nishino, Sho; Yoshida, Tadayoshi; Tsujimura, Norio

JPS Conference Proceedings (Internet), 24, p.011020_1 - 011020_6, 2019/01

We studied the application of AmLi interrogation neutron sources, which originally deployed in non-destructive assay apparatus for nuclear safeguard, to calibration work. To determine the emission rate, the angular distribution of neutron fluence was measured by a potable long counter. The emission rate at the date of measurement (October 23rd, 2015) was determined to be 1.00$$times$$10$$^{6}$$ n/s ($$pm$$4.1% (${it k}$ = 2)).

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for nuclear fuel material

Akaoka, Katsuaki; Miyabe, Masabumi; Otobe, Haruyoshi; Wakaida, Ikuo

Reza Kenkyu, 42(12), p.918 - 922, 2014/12

For the remote analysis of the next generation nuclear fuel material containing minor actinide (MA), Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) was applied to uranium oxide (U$$_{3}$$O$$_{8}$$) including a small amount of neodymium oxide (Nd$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$) as a simulated sample of MA. By using deconvolution technique for the spectra of Nd in U, the complex, overlapped and confused spectra were separated and their actual intensities were determined. As a result, the calibration curve with good linearity and the detection limit of less than 700 ppm were demonstrated.

In the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI), a calculation code -UCWBC code- for whole-body counter calibrations using voxel phantoms has been developed as an EGS4 Monte Carlo user code. To validate the UCWBC code for calibrating whole-body counters in JAERI, response functions and counting efficiencies of a p-type high-purity Ge semiconductor detector used for the whole-body counter were evaluated for a water-filled block-shape phantom by the UCWBC code and were measured by experiments. Furthermore, counting efficiencies of the Ge semiconductor detector for the male and female voxel phantoms developed in JAERI were evaluated in the photon energy range 60-1836 keV by the UCWBC code in order to examine the differences between the counting efficiencies for voxel phantoms. In conclusion, it was found that the response functions and counting efficiencies of the Ge semiconductor detector by the UCWBC code for the water-filled block-shape phantom are in good agreement with measured data. The UCWBC code was validated by the comparisons.

For the accurate estimation of neutron dose equivalents, it is important to calibrate dosemeters in the field whose energy spectrum is similar to that in the workplace. For the purpose, studies are made toward the built of the spectrum changeable neutron calibration fields with the Van-de-Graff accelerator in the FRS in JAERI. The fields are produced by bombarding proton or deuteron beam from the accelerator to suitable targets surrounded by quasi-cylindrical moderators and absorbers of various materials. In the fields, neutron spectra with wide range energy index should be provided with sufficient fluence rate for the calibration of dosemeters. The objectives and conceptual design of the fields are discussed here, followed by the test simulation results of neutron spectra produced by various arrangements of a target and moderators.

The facility of Radiation Standards (FRS) of JAERI has equipped with the concrete-moderated neutron calibration fields as simulated workplace neutron fields. The fields use an Am-Be (37GBq) neutron source placed in the narrow space surrounded by concrete wall and bricks to produce scattered neutrons. The neutron spectra of the fields were measured with Bonner multi-sphere spectrometer system (BMS), spherical recoil-proton proportional counters (RPCs), and a liquid scintillation counter (NE-213). The results were compared with each other, and the neutron spectra and the ambient dose equivalent rate, ${it H}$$$^{*}$$(10), were agreed well within the uncertainty. The angular distributions of neutron fluence were calculated by the MCNP-4B2 Monte Carlo code to obtain the reference personal dose equivalent rate, ${it H}$$$_{p}$$(10). The calculated results show that the scattered neutrons have a wide variety of incident angles. The reference ${it H}$$$_{p}$$(10) values considered the angular distribution were found to be 10-18% smaller than those without consideration.

Evaluation of counting efficiency of whole-body counter using voxel phantoms

Kinase, Sakae; Takagi, Shunji*; Noguchi, Hiroshi; Saito, Kimiaki

Proceedings of 11th International Congress of the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA-11) (CD-ROM), 7 Pages, 2004/05

The present study was performed to validate the UCWBC code for calibrating in vivo measurements. Furthermore, the calibration data for the adult voxel phantoms developed in JAERI were evaluated by the UCWBC code in order to examine the differences between the calibration data for voxel phantoms, including a voxel version of water-filled block-shape phantom based on an actual phantom that is used for the calibration of the whole-body counter in JAERI. It was found that the calculated calibration data by the UCWBC code for the water-filled block-shape phantom show good agreement with measured ones. Consequently, the UCWBC code was validated by the comparisons. It was also found that the calibration data depend on phantoms of different sizes and the effective distance between phantom and detector. The calibration of in vivo measurements using voxel phantoms for individuals would be quite useful for the improvement in accuracy of the measurement results.

The International Standards ISO4037-1 of the International Organization for Standardization widely applied in the world to construct X-ray reference fields for performance tests of radiation measuring instruments. The application of the current JAERI's X-ray reference field constructed in accordance with the Japanese Standards should be limited for domestic purposes becase of the characterization technique different from the International Standards. Therefore, for application to international performance tests, X-ray reference fields in the narrow, wide and high air-kerma series based on the International Standards were established using the medium-hard X-ray generator of the Facility of Radiation Standards(FRS), JAERI. This report presents quality characterization, estimation of X-ray spectra of each dose units of the new FRS's fields, and comparison of the qualities and the X-ray spectra to those of the ISO's. The FRS's qualities show good agreement with ISO's: the reference fields should serve for performance tests for international radiation protection purposes.

Systematic calibration of beam position monitor in the high intensity proton accelerator (J-PARC) linac

Sato, Susumu; Igarashi, Zenei*; Lee, S.*; Tomisawa, Tetsuo; Hiroki, Fumio; Kishiro, Junichi; Ikegami, Masanori*; Kondo, Yasuhiro; Hasegawa, Kazuo; Ueno, Akira; et al.

Proceedings of 22nd International Linear Accelerator Conference (LINAC 2004), p.429 - 431, 2004/00

As a joint project of KEK and JAERI, a MW class of high intensity proton accelerator (J-PARC), consisting of Linac, 3 GeV-RCS, 50 GeV-MR, is under construction at Tokai, Japan. For this accelerator, it is required to minimize the beam loss (typically, lower than 0.1$$sim$$1 W/m at the linac). To achieve the requirement, beam trajectory needs to be controlled with accuracy of some 100 micro-meter. The first stage of the acceleration (up to 181 MeV during the first stage of construction) is done by linac. The beam position monitor (BPM) in the linac utilizes 4 strip-line pickups (50 ohm) on the beam transportation chamber. In this paper, systematic calibration of the BPM is described.
